This project emerges from an interdisciplinary collaboration between the Institute of Visual Communication (IVK HGK FHNW) and the Department of Cultural Anthropology (University of Basel). As we devote particular attention to the medium “image,” we investigate the impact of images in social negotiation processes that take place during urban planning related participatory events. These events are organized by a variety of institutional and societal actors. An ethnographic perspective as part of our research enables us to gain a better understanding which images promote or rather prevent social negotiation in participatory processes. The aim of the project is twofold: first, we examine formats and settings of visual representations and communication. Second, together with different constellations of participating communities, we develop further approaches (formats, methods, settings) that explicitly promote participation and emancipatory practices in terms of democratic legitimacy.

Dieses Projekt beruht auf der interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit des Instituts für Visuelle Kommunikation (HGK FHNW) und der Kulturanthropologie (Universität Basel). Dem Medium “Bild” widmen wir besondere Aufmerksamkeit und untersuchen die Auswirkung von Bildern in sozialen Aushandlungsprozessen, die während partizipativer Veranstaltungen zur Stadtplanung stattfinden. Diese werden von verschienenden institutionellen und gesellschaftlichen Akteur*innen angeboten. Das Vorgehen wird aus ethnographischer Perspektive begleitet um festzustellen, welche Bilder die sozialen Aushandlungen in Partizipationsprozessen fördern oder unterbinden. Ziel des Projekts ist es einerseits, Formate und Settings visueller Darstellungen und Kommunikation zu untersuchen. Andererseits entwickeln wir gemeinsam mit verschiedenen partizipatorischen Gemeinschaften weitere Vorgehensweisen (Formate, Methoden, Settings) und emanzipatorische Praktiken, die Mitwirkung im Sinne demokratischer Legitimität explizit fördern.
